Hope S. Marshall and Lisha L. Graham Elected as Fellows of the American Bar Foundation

Birmingham, AL – White Arnold & Dowd P.C. is pleased to announce that shareholders Hope S. Marshall and Lisha L. Graham have been elected as Fellows of the American Bar Foundation (“ABF”). The Fellows, an honorary organization of lawyers, judges, and legal scholars whose public and private careers have demonstrated outstanding dedication to the welfare of their communities and to the highest principles of the legal profession, support the research of the ABF. Membership in The Fellows is limited to less than one percent of lawyers licensed to practice in each jurisdiction. Members are nominated by Fellows in their jurisdiction and elected by the Board of the American Bar Foundation. Ms. Marshall and Ms. Graham join firm shareholders Augusta S. Dowd, Linda G. Flippo, Kitty Rogers Brown, and Jackson M. Neal as ABF Fellows.

Ms. Marshall’s practice focuses on criminal defense, white collar criminal defense, and general civil litigation. She represents companies and individuals in connection with criminal investigations, as well as parallel civil and criminal proceedings. Ms. Marshall practices in municipal, state and federal courts, including appellate courts. She is active in the local, state, and national bar associations and serves on the Alabama Securities Commission.

Ms. Graham represents clients in various areas of civil defense litigation, with a primary focus on insurance defense. Through her practice, she has represented general contractors and subcontractors in various types of construction litigation and indemnity actions. She also represents both companies and individuals in a variety of commercial cases, including premises liability, breach of contract, negligence, and products liability. In the products liability defense area, Ms. Graham has represented manufacturers, distributors, sellers, and installers against negligence and strict liability claims based upon alleged product defects which resulted in injuries or death. Additionally, Ms. Graham represents both plaintiffs and defendants in financial litigation, business torts, and fraud cases.

Lana Bell Nominated to YWCA Central Alabama Junior Board of Directors

Florida Shareholder W. Chambers Waller IV Recognized as “Rising Star”

Jackson M. Neal Named to Future Leaders Forum

The Forum seeks to cultivate leaders from among a group of motivated local attorneys who have been in practice for 3-7 years. Recognizing a need for leadership identification and development among Birmingham’s young attorneys relatively early in their careers, a group of Birmingham Bar Association leaders, including White Arnold & Dowd’s Managing Lawyer Augusta S. Dowd, organized the first Forum class in 2009. Since that time, the Forum has emerged as one of the premiere leadership and professional development experiences for lawyers in their early years of practice. White Arnold & Dowd’s Kitty Rogers Brown was a member of the inaugural class (2009), and shareholders Hope S. Marshall (2010), Lisha L. Graham (2014), and Curtis H. Seal (2021) are all graduates of the Forum as well. Mr. Neal’s participation will continue the Firm’s commitment to develop its lawyers as leaders who serve the local bar, the profession, and the community.

A Birmingham native, Mr. Neal primarily focuses on civil and complex litigation and he practices in state and federal courts throughout Alabama. WAD Shareholders Recognized for Pro Bono Service

Birmingham, AL – White Arnold & Dowd P.C. shareholders J. Mark White and Hope S. Marshall were recently recognized by Alabama Appleseed for their work in helping secure the release of Michael Schumacher. As Appleseed noted, Mr. Schumacher “was condemned to die in prison at age 24 after a robbery conviction in which he stood lookout with a broken pool cue. He was sentenced to a mandatory life imprisonment without parole under Alabama’s Habitual Felony Offender Act based on three minor priors, two of which occurred during a single incident when he was 17 years old. Last year, Appleseed won Michael’s release after 35 years of incarceration.” Mr. Schumacher shares his story here.

Hope S. Marshall Recognized by the Alabama Civil Justice Foundation

Marshall was recently recognized by the Alabama Civil Justice Foundation for her service to the organization and to the profession. The Foundation, which “believes in the value of the human spirit and its ability to grow and flourish in a world characterized by fairness and sharing,” is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2022. Ms. Marshall currently serves on the Foundation’s Grants Committee.

Ms. Marshall joined the firm as an attorney in 2007, and her practice focuses on criminal defense, white collar criminal defense, and general civil litigation. She represents companies and individuals in connection with criminal investigations, as well as parallel civil and criminal proceedings. Ms. Marshall practices in municipal, state and federal courts, including appellate courts. She is active in the Alabama State Bar, Alabama Lawyers Association, Birmingham Inn of Court, and the Magic City Bar Association. Ms. Marshall is a Commissioner on the Alabama Securities Commission. She was elected to serve on the Birmingham Bar Association’s Executive Committee in 2020, and she completed her term as chair of the Birmingham Bar Association’s Grievance Committee in 2021.

Super Lawyers rates outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. Each candidate is evaluated on 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement. The annual, state-by-state selections are made using a patented multiphase process that includes a statewide survey of lawyers, an independent research evaluation of candidates and peer reviews by practice area. According to Super Lawyers, “the objective is to create a credible, comprehensive and diverse listing of outstanding attorneys that can be used as a resource for attorneys and consumers searching for legal counsel.” Each year, no more than five percent of the lawyers in the Mid-South are selected by the research team for selection as Super Lawyers, and no more than 2.5 percent of the lawyers in Mid-South 40 years old or younger or who have been in practice for 10 or fewer years are selected as Rising Stars. Lisha Graham Named 2021 NextGenBHM: Law Honoree

Kitty Rogers Brown Tapped for Leadership Birmingham

Birmingham, AL – White Arnold & Dowd P.C. is pleased to announce that shareholder Kitty Rogers Brown has been selected as a member of the 2021-2022 Class of Leadership Birmingham, one of the Birmingham’s premier leadership and educational opportunities. Since 1982, Leadership Birmingham has identified and cultivated groups of approximately 50 leaders each year from diverse backgrounds. The program’s stated purpose is to “ensure that leaders in the community are educated about current issues and challenges in our region” with the goal of seeing its graduates “are better equipped with information and networks to be more effective as leaders.” Ms. Brown joins firm shareholders J. Mark White (2005) and Augusta S. Dowd (2007), who are also Leadership Birmingham graduates.

Ms. Brown represents individual and corporate defendants in white collar criminal actions, primarily in the areas of healthcare fraud, financial crimes, and environmental crimes, as well as in parallel civil and criminal proceedings.
